Audio Developments

Our main hope at the beginning of this project was that we would be able to create all the sounds we needed from scratch.  However given time constraints for our final product we decided that the best thing to do would be to get the sounds we needed from elsewhere.  Luckily our designer, Paul, has a brother, Ed Bird, who makes music for a living and so we were lucky enough to be able to ask him if he would help us with our main soundtrack.  Overnight, quicker than we ever imagined, Paul's brother had created two major theme pieces for us, a normal sound track and also a track for the spirit world.  This was fantastic as it saved us a lot of time and also provided us with brand new music that was handcrafted to our game.  This was admittedly a major work around, and also a lucky thing for us that we had this opportunity, but it was interesting to be able to begin working with outside freelancers, as you may do when creating games in the industry.
As well as this we decided that we needed more atmospheric sounds such as character sounds for movement and jump, as well as state sounds such as checkpoints and changes between worlds.  We originally discussed doing these ourselves too but in the end reverted to use Freesound (http://freesound.org), an open source sound file site, from which we could get all the effects we wanted for free.  We could then take these sounds an edit them to fit in with our game.  The sounds that we have covered using Freesound tracks are:

  • Character walk
  • Character jump
  • Checkpoint activation
  • World switch
  • Starting Gong
One of the things we would like to do in future developments of the game would be to go back to these sounds and create our own custom versions.  This would allow us greater freedom, and a chance to experiment more with the sounds to make them as suitable as possible to our game.
